How to Build a Weekly Sports Betting Routine

Successful betting is 70 percent routine and 30 percent insight. If your routine is chaotic, your insight does not matter. Here is how to structure a week that actually works.

The deal

I spent years driving to casinos, playing blackjack for 8 hours, driving home. The routine was everything. Same casino, same time, same table. The variance felt smaller because the structure was consistent.

Betting is the same. The people who win are the ones who build routines. The ones who place random bets at random times lose money consistently.

Round 1: Monday: Line Analysis

Monday morning, sportsbooks release their opening lines for the week's games. This is when you start work.

Spend two to three hours analyzing lines across three to five major sportsbooks (Bet365, DraftKings, FanDuel, if you are in the US). Find line discrepancies. If one book has NFL favorites at -110 and another at -105, that is a difference.

Compare these lines to your own probability estimates. Do not bet yet. Just document what you see. Make a note of how the line shifts over the week.

Round 2: Tuesday: Model Updates

If you have a model (and you should), update it with new information: injuries, weather reports, recent news.

Run your model. Generate a list of opportunities. An opportunity is a bet where your probability estimate is significantly higher than the market's implied probability.

Document these opportunities. Do not place bets yet.

Round 3: Wednesday: Research

Deeper research on any opportunity that survives your model. Talk to other bettors. Read beat reporters. Check recent performance trends.

You might eliminate some opportunities because new information changes your probability estimate. You might increase conviction on others.

By Wednesday evening, you should have a list of three to seven serious opportunities.

Round 4: Thursday: First Wave of Bets

Place your first bets on your highest-conviction opportunities. This is early in the week, so lines might move significantly before the weekend.

Place smaller bets than you might otherwise. You have more week left. You want to be flexible.

Round 5: Friday: Adjustment

Lines have moved based on professional sharp money and public money. Some of your opportunities might be gone (line moved against you). Some might be better (line moved further in your favor).

Place additional bets on high-conviction opportunities that are still present. Reduce or eliminate bets on opportunities that no longer represent value.

Round 6: Saturday: Event Day

Do not place new bets on Saturday games. It is too late. The information has been incorporated into the lines.

Watch your games. Track results. Understand what happened.

Round 7: Sunday: Evaluation

After the games finish, evaluate your week. Did your bets win? Did they lose? More importantly, did you have a positive expected value even if the actual results were negative?

Variance happens. You can make good bets and lose money if variance is unlucky. You can make bad bets and make money if variance is lucky.

The question is: did you execute your process correctly?

Round 8: The Banking Question

Keep a betting ledger. Document every bet. Amount wagered, odds, outcome, profit or loss. At the end of the week, sum up your wins and losses.

Over eight weeks, you should see a pattern. If you are winning, you are beating the house edge. If you are losing steadily, something is wrong with your process.

Round 9: The Hours

Monday to Wednesday: eight hours of work. Thursday to Sunday: execution and observation.

Total time commitment per week: maybe fifteen hours for serious analysis.

This is if you are a serious bettor trying to beat the market. If you are a casual bettor, your routine can be simpler: review lines once, pick a few bets, place them, watch the games.

But the structure matters. The discipline matters. The routine is where the edge comes from.

People think betting is about being smart. It is mostly about being consistent.
